Fifth Housiversary

I can't believe it's been 5 years since we bought the house.  The actual date we took possession was August 24, 2005, so I'm a little late (imagine that!).

This has been by far the busiest year since we bought the house.  First, and most important, we had a baby!  Ethan is turning 1 next week, and I can't imagine my life without him.  He has a wonderful, happy personality, and he's incredibly curious and adventurous.  He crawls everywhere, gets into everything, and needs constant watching to ensure he doesn't inadvertently kill himself (which on some days it seems he's intent on doing!).  Parenthood is awesome, and I'm looking forward to the next year of this never-ending project.

Our next biggest project was the upstairs closet shuffle, which is functionally complete but still a cosmetic nightmare.  We installed Rubbermaid modular rods and shelving in both bedroom closets, and everything is painted.  I have the doors for the office closet, but haven't yet found any for the bedroom.  We also don't have the molding back up, although Shayne did fabricate matching trim for the doorways.

But we finally got the upstairs floors refinished!!  I hired out the sanding but did the shellacking on my own.  They look so much better.  They were never truly awful (except for the office floor), but the polyurethane was really lacking in depth and color.

My favorite project of the year was one I did very little work on and has nothing to do with the house itself.  We took the plunge and got chickens, so Shayne built me a beautiful, big chicken coop.  My girls aren't laying yet, but should start soon.  The neighbors all think they're entertaining, so we let them free-range.  They do go a little farther than I thought...  Thye've been sighted as far away as the bar or the church at the corner, and once in a while a neighbor will shoo them home.  But they come running when they see me, which is nothing short of hilarious.  They stick their necks out and run straight at me, clucking for treats.  Our neighbors across the street laugh every time they see it, and Shayne calls me the chicken whisperer.

The girls in their run
Shayne's favorite project is probably the shed.  He's still building it, but he wanted a place to store the riding mower, push mower, and garden tools.  Personally I think our garage is plenty big enough, but I'm not sure I have enough testosterone to say that with any authority.  I'm not complaining.  He's building it, it will match the chicken coop, and it makes him happy to build it.  And the more building experience he gets, the less likely it is that we'll have to pay someone to help us with house projects.

In the past year, we've also managed to flood the kitchen twice more, resulting in laminate flooring that will never, ever be the same.  Shayne bought some tiles to temporarily repair the messed up ceiling (I say "temporarily" because that entire room's days are numbered.  I cannot wait to gut it.  And the bathroom...), but Lowes no longer carries that particular color laminate.  The boards themselved don't look awful, but the tongue-and-groove part is damaged from the water.  We're going to try cutting off the tongues to see if we can just get it to lay flat until we totally remodel.  And we're going to have a clean-out installed in the main drain to prevent future back-ups.  And maybe a check valve in the dishwasher line so it can't back-up.  Ever.  Because if this had happened in my newly remodeled kitchen, I'd have a heart attack.

We added 4 more raised beds to the single one from last year.  I only planted a small garden this year, but harvested over 30 lbs of roma tomatoes.  My broccoli kind of fried in the heat, but the plants are still alive, and I have some hope for a fall harvest.  I also had a bumper crop of green beans.  I put up strawberry and raspberry jams, strawberry ice cream or cheesecake topping, cherry butter, pasta sauce, applesauce, and apple butter.  I still have corn and peaches left from last year.  I didn't freeze anything except the 7 chickens my friend raised.  We're in the process of rebuilding our food storage, since we've been using it more than rotating it...!

Another ongoing project (if you can call it that) is getting organized.  We've now lived here long enough to know how we use the house, so we've really started to pare down our belongings.  I'm saving 90% of Ethan's clothes, toys, and gear, but getting rid of most anything we haven't used in the past year.  I thoroughly reorganized the bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, living room, and bathroom, and we're working on the back porch/laundry room and basement.  Some of it is really difficult.  There are things that you only use occasionally, but it would be silly to get rid of.  And other things, like tools and renovation supplies (paint removers, sandpaper, etc) that I wish I didn't need, but I do.  But we're getting there...

In the next year, I'd really like to finish the upstairs.  Completely.  And install our "new" prairie-style front door.  That's all.

More stairway progress and pics

I'm almost done!!!  All that's left to do is stain the landing and the baseboard caps (which are sitting in the dining room), then shellac the whole thing.

I never thought I'd get here.

And it even looks good!

The slowest renovation ever

Is there anyone who renovates a house slower than we do?  I was reading through some of my old posts and realized that we started tearing up the living room in November 2005.  Ths stairway stripping started in early 2006.  And I started into the office in June 2006.

It's 2009!

And I haven't truly finished anything yet!

Living room is at 98%.  I have to put 3 pieces of woodwork back up.
The stairway is at about 75%.  I need to finish staining, then shellac.
Office...  Maybe 50%.  We need to paint the walls and trim, buy/salvage/create new trim for the new closet opening, and refinish the floors.
Nursery is at about 90%.  Floor refinishing.
Master bedroom...  Well, we haven't even completed the demo part, just removed the crappy bookshelf to make a lovely hole in the wall.
Kitchen is a lost cause.
We actually haven't messed with the dining room except to paint the paneling.  It's the only room in the house that is still intact.

*sigh*

Stairway progress pics

The weather cleared up, so after work I came home and started staining the staircase.  I did the newel post, railing, "front" of the spindles, and the "front" woodwork/baseboard.  I still have to do the stairs themselves, the "back" baseboard, the other 3 sides of the spindles, and the "cap" of the baseboards that we removed when we repaired the walls 3 years ago.  Still, we've come a long way, and I think it looks great.

Remember before??
I feel obligated to mention that that's before we even bought the house...  That's not our furniture!

A very scary "during" picture from another angle:

During the stripping:

And after sanding (and paint! and floor refinishing!):

And today:
The flash isn't terribly flattering to the color.  Imagine it richer and with more golden tones.  I tried to get one without the flash, but my tripod is AWOL, and I'm not really in the mood to go searching.  Suffice it to say that I'm really happy with how it's shaping up.  It'll look even better once we put the missing bits of woodwork back on.  There are a few spots that are less than perfect, but that happens with any old house project, I think.  I'll also have to get some wood-colored paint to touch up the spots of paint that absolutely refused to budge.  There are also a few spots where the old shellac/stain remains, and the new stain matches just about perfectly.  If you don't know where to look, you'd never notice.
And I remembered the other day that we bought woodwork at the Habitat ReStore that will match what we have and fit around the window at the bottom of the stairs...  Maybe I should start sanding that too.  'Cause woodwork really adds something.  Like making it look like less of a crack house.
I'm so excited!  We may actually finish the entire living room renovation/restoration before I die of old age!

Cheater, cheater...

But since I'm 7 months pregnant, I figure I'm entitled to cheat just a little bit...

One of my pet projects has always been the staircase.  I used the heat gun to strip all the paint off the newel post, banister, and spindles, then sanded all of the little intricacies.  It took forever.  So long, in fact, that I lost motivation for a while.  Then a LONG time later, I came back and sanded the treads, baseboard, and vertical pieces.  That also took forever.  And since I only had a random orbit sander at the time, I left little triangular spots of unsanded wood in all the corners as well as between each spindle.  Other than that I am finished, but have no inclination to sit hunched over with a sander for several hours doing touch-up work.  I wasn't all that motivated before I got pregnant, but now it's even worse.  I just want it done.

So...  On Monday night I was with my mom at a friend's house when I remembered that the friend's husband is a handyman.  He built the framing over the old hall closet opening in the office.  And he did a very nice job.  So I asked him whether or not he would be willing to sand the remainder of my staircase.  He agreed and said he'd be there Wednesday morning.

I feel slightly guilty for putting this project off on someone else, but I also feel very liberated.  I'm in full baby-preparation mode, so I've been taking on some odd projects instead of the ones I should be doing.  I spent most of Sunday afternoon removing every single item from the kitchen cabinets, wiping down the cabinets, and then completely reorganizing the kitchen.  Shayne said I need to put up signs so he'll know where everything is now.  I'm also repainting a cheap little wooden bookshelf and dresser for the baby's room.  Honestly, just keeping up with the general housecleaning is something of a chore now since I'm tired most of the time, and anything I can get done on top of that is just a bonus.  Still, I feel like I'm busting my ass every spare moment and especially on weekends.  So, in the interest of FINALLY finishing a project, I'm cheating.  :)

By the time I get home from work tonight, we should have a completely sanded staircase...!!! Time to go buy some more "golden mahogany" stain and clear shellac!

What? It's November?!

I can't believe that the year is almost over.  That means I have 2 months to finish the projects I had started in order to complete my New Year's Resolutions.  In cause you forgot (I did), here they are again:
  1. Finish office, master bedroom, and little front bedroom.
  2. Find and install a "new" front door
  3. Finish the stairway

Doesn't sound like too much, does it?  Here is what I had accomplished as of June:
  1. Last pieces of paneling removed from office, little front bedroom (nursery!) done except for floor refinishing.
  2. New front door found! Carpenter AWOL.
  3. I've vacuumed the stairway several times and removed 1 nail. No progress.
  4. New laminate floor in the kitchen after ripping out the unsanitary carpet.
  5. Gotten rid of 90% of unnecessary junk in the house. I'm pretty proud of this one :)
  6. Begun restoration of 1941 Chambers stove. I've thoroughly cleaned everything and replaced the service cabinet door and floor, plus gotten the parts for natural gas conversion. I'm waiting for hubby to remove 5 stripped screws from the chrome top. Once that's done, we can send it to be rechromed, and then we're ready for reassembly!
  7. Edged the flowerbed with brick pavers.
  8. Agonized over how little I accomplish.
And since then, here's what else I've added to the "completed" list:
  1. All wallpaper removed from office
  2. Large hole knocked in immaculate plaster wall in order to make closet door opening wider
  3. Old knob-and-tube wiring discovered in new closet door opening
  4. Office walls prepped for skimcoating, which I'm crazy enough to want to try to do myself
  5. All upstairs doors removed, stripped, and sanded
  6. 90% of stairway sanded.  The top 4 steps after the landing are refinished and back in place (1 step still awaiting stain)
  7. Stove restoration on hold, pending removal of stripped screws via industrial drill press
  8. Spoke to carpenter numerous times and secured multiple promises to call when he's going to be out my way.  Resovled to find new carpenter...
  9. Veggie garden abandoned after pest infestation and discovery that there's not enough sun in that location
And still to accomplish:
  1. Skimcoat office walls
  2. Refinish all upstairs floors
  3. Finish sanding the damned staircase
  4. Stain and shellac the damned staircase
  5. Remove wall in master bedroom made of paneling and replace with drywall
  6. Reskimcoat some areas of the master bedroom walls to even out
  7. Strip and refinish master bedroom woodwork
Why am I thinking that this isn't all going to get done...?
