Homemade bread for people who have never made bread

While trying to eat more local/homemade foods, I started thinking about bread.  So many commercial breads contain high fructose corn syrup (and I don't care what the TV ads say, I don't think it's all that safe.  Too many chemicals involved in the processing), and even the ones that don't still contain preservatives.  So when I saw an article in Mother Earth News for bread that contains only flour, water, yeast, and salt and required minimal preparation, it piqued my interest.

Reading the article, I found that the "5 minutes a day" tagline was a bit of exaggeration.  The bread has to sit for a while to rise, and then sit again before baking.  But, really, all you have to do is mix the ingredients together.  Then you let it sit.  Then you refrigerate it for at least 3 hours.  Cut off a hunk and let it sit again.  Then bake.

I've got a wad of very sticky bread dough in the fridge right now, and I'm planning on baking it up tomorrow.  We'll see how this goes...  If it works, I'll share the recipe!

HFCS makes my stomach churn, literally. I get sick if I eat anything with a lot of it. A can of regular soda/pop will make me sick to my stomach for a couple hours. I don't eat much of the stuff any more. The bread I buy is without it.

Once we have a full size kitchen again, I'll be making bread. Nothing more enjoyable than fresh bread out of the oven!

Or you could be like us crazy people and buy a bread maker. All ya do is thrown in flour, sugar, salt, water, and yeast, turn it on and 45 mminutes later...bread! lol. ;)

Hi! I recently started reading your blog! A food processor is also great for making homemade bread, with just a few ingredients (flour, yeast, pinch of salt and olive oil). Then you can use it for other stuff too! I have a Cuisinart and it is great for bread and comes with a recipe book with some good recipes. I also make pizza dough all the time with it. :)

If you like homemade bread invest in a bread machine. They're awesome and do all the work for you.
