Interior Decorating Advice Needed

This is our inspiration picture for the living room:
Yes, I know it's a dining room. But those are the colors that now grace the walls in our living room. Our pine floors are about the same color as the ones shown in the picture, and the woodwork, should we ever get it stained, will be a few shades lighter than the photo.
We are going to be buying all new furniture, so we're starting with a clean slate. We're thinking that a lighter colored couch would be good, since the walls are so dark. We also want an area rug, probably also in light colors. The furniture, aside from the couch and a piano, will be Craftsman/Mission style. I realize this is pretty wide open, but I'm a color wimp, and I'd like some suggestions on what colors would coordinate well without being boring or looking too modern. Any suggestions on what color the couch and/or rug should be? Thoughts on accent colors?

Mission furniture is real easy to decorate around and live with. The new Stickley stuff is pricy, but well worth the money. If you go this route be sure you can live with the stuff forever...it will out last your lifetime! As far as a rug goes: an oriental is always classic. Believe it or not there are some fantastic prices on oriental rugs on e-bay. They are not what I'd call investment grade....but when you are living with the stuff everyday I don't think an expensive irreplaceable rug makes much sense...
Be sure to check on the shipping charges before you bid...they can really negate a good rug price....
The last 9x12 Tabriz Rug I got for less than $250. and that included shipping!

You might want to check out http://www.colourlovers.com/
This site might give you some ideas on color combinations when you look at other peoples' palettes. Or you can create your own palette! I used this site to determine those colors that would mesh well throughout the house. I hope you like it!

You can find all your inspiration colors in the photo itself. Look at the color of the wicker chairs, that would be a great color for the couch. The moss green on the table would be a great color for the throw pillows and the rug on the chest would be great to copy for the rug on the floor. Black and white photos might be good for the walls, hung as they are in the inspiration room.
