Last night, we spontaneously ripped out the living room carpet. It started out as removing some woodwork, but somehow Shayne started picking at the carpet...
This is what our living room looks like now...
The floor is in excellent shape, but (as with everything else in this house!) there's something a little odd. It looks to me like some previous owner (probably the one who built walls out of paneling) had an oriental rug in the room. And instead of refinishing the floor, he only refinished around the edges where the rug wasn't. So... The floor has the old finish in the middle and a new finish in an 18" border around the room. Whatever. We have to sand it all down anyways.
Sounds like me ... I'm always getting ahead of myself and ripping out carpet. We took out the carpet in our half bath (ick) and have hideous plywood out for everyone to see.
ReplyDeleteWe had exactly that same kind of carpet stain on some of our hardwood floors. After we ripped up our carpet.
ReplyDeleteYes, there's an actual difference in the rwo finished. I can see the lines from from the sander where they stopped sanding. The dark area is a little higher and looks exactly like the floor in the office (which is still under carpet, but I peeked). I've no doubt that some of the darkness is caused from the carpet, though, since the padding was somewhat stuck to it...
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I don't have any tips for folks who are refinishing their floors. This is a first for me, and I'm not even sure yet what kind of finish I'm going to use...
It looks way better without the carpets. Anything's better than shag. It's going to be lovely.
ReplyDeleteI know this post is from a billion years ago (I'm an exaggerator) but I have to comment on the gorgeous hardwoods under that ugly carpet, who in their right mind covered that up?! My husband and I have just put an offer in on a 1940s historic colonial style home in southeast Texas and the entire place has original hardwoods in it, I can't wait to start on it! (If they let us buy it, that is.)
